AninspiringstoryofhumansoulswhosurvivedthedehumanizingsystemofslaveryintheOldSouth,ClaimingSundayalsoprovidesimportantkeystocomprehendingmodernracialrelationsinamoreenlighteningandhistoricallyaccuratemanner.ThestoryistoldthrougharichlydetailednarrativerevealingthelivesoftheenslavedontheDevereuxPlantationandthroughinterviewswiththeirmodern-daydescendants.JulienDevereuxandhiselderlyfather,John,cametoTexasin1841fromAlabama.JulienfirstsettledinMontgomeryCountyandthenmovedtoRuskCountyin1846.Whenhediedin1856heowned10,500acresofEastTexascottonlandandseventy-fiveenslavedBlackAmericans.Julien’swidow,SarahLandrumDevereux,maintainedtheplantationthroughtheCivilWar.TheDevereuxSlaveCommunitycenteredontwopeople,TabbyandScott.Togethertheyraisedelevenchildrenandsawtheirfamilygrowovertheyears,asotherlineswereaddedtotheCommunity.TheSlaveCommunityenduredthevariousmovesfromAlabamatoMontgomeryCounty,Texas,andthenontoRuskCounty,butalawsuitfiledafterJohnDevereux’sdeathbrokeupTabbyandScott’simmediatefamilyandthreatenedtheunityoftheentireCommunity.TheDevereuxSlaveCommunity’sstrength,endurance,anddeterminationhelpedtorepairthedamagefromthedivisionofthecoreoftheCommunityandcarriedthemwholethroughtofreedomin1865.
